Truman risks war for Korea policy shift in Asia

President Truman ordered U S air and sea forces to support South Korea against invasion by Communist forces, signaling a new Far Eastern policy. Officials weighed the risk of direct clash with Russia, while stressing commitments to Iran, Turkey, Indochina, and Western Europe, and warning Formosa’s occupation would threaten Pacific security. The move reversed prior nonmilitary emphasis and tied military action to broader anticommunist aims.
