Bride Sues Priest Over Excommunication Denial of Marriage

In Millville New Jersey on June 27 a civil suit seeks $10000 in damages for slander filed by Mrs Bertha Wills Giuffra against Rev William Fitzgerald pastor of St Mary Magdalene Roman Catholic Church. The suit claims the priest denounced the couple from the pulpit saying no marriage existed in the church and excommunicated Giuffra and his fiancée. The couple had chosen a Methodist ceremony after a prior Catholic attempt failed. The plaintiff seeks judicial ruling on whether a priest may denounce a non Catholic marriage from the pulpit.
