Peres government calls for inquiry into secret service cover up

In Jerusalem supporters of Prime Minister Shimon Peres pressed for an inquiry into alleged Shin Bet cover up surrounding the deaths of two captured Palestinian hijackers. Chaim Herzog granted immunity to Shin Bet chief Avraham Shalom and others, drawing protests about political responsibility and accountability at the top levels, including Yitzhak Shamir. The affair follows earlier calls by Attorney General Yosef Harish for a police inquiry, which was resisted after Shalom's resignation. Energy Minister Moshe Shahal urged continuing probes into political involvement, while Shamir defended the Shin Bet’s role in counterterrorism.
