Graham Loses To Willis Smith
Raleigh NC June 2 President Truman will lose a strong supporter among Southern Senators next year as a result of yesterday's North Carolina runoff primary. Willis Smith 62, a Democratic stalwart for over 30 years, campaigned against much of the Fair Deal and said Administration policies trend toward Socialism. He blamed Truman's civil rights committee for injecting the Negro issue into the primary. Smith opposes FEPC, the Brannan farm plan, socialized medicine and other Truman items, favors an end to deficit spending. With returns from nearly all 1990 polling places Smith led 277672 to 257156 Graham.
