Plan Would Replace Education Majors With Liberal Arts Path
Maryland higher education secretary Shaila Aery released a blueprint proposing to abolish education as a distinct major and require future teachers to earn a liberal arts degree with a fifth year of college and school based coaching. The plan aims to attract stronger candidates into teaching and would be reviewed by the Maryland Higher Education Commission with summer hearings and a September adoption target. The proposal also calls for a state funded telecommunications network and new scholarships to support undergraduates volunteering in public schools and those entering technical fields.

Nettle numbers up but still down
ANNAPOLIS AP Sea nettles will be more plentiful this summer though overall numbers will stay relatively low. Researcher David Cargo of Chesapeake Biological Laboratory says storms and warm spells may yield larger nettles, with average to below average counts expected despite a prior cool year.
