Montgomery County sues Airpark over runway extension
Montgomery County files a suit against Montgomery County Airpark Inc and the Montgomery County Revenue Authority to block the new runway extension at the airpark near Gaithersburg from 3150 to 4200 feet. A show cause order was issued by Circuit Court Judge John P. Moore with a preliminary hearing set for July 9 at 10 am. The county argues the extension, done without county knowledge between May 12 and 28, poses safety and noise hazards and could affect mixed use by light and jet aircraft. A related meeting between County Executive James P. Gleason and Authority Chairman Richard H. Eisinger is planned for Wednesday. A Baker Park concert by West Side Jazz Ensemble is scheduled for Sunday at 8 pm, featuring Frederick High and West Frederick Junior High students directed by John Slezak.

Walk For Hungry Falls Short Of Goal
Eighty walkers journeyed 19 miles from Frederick to Damascus on June 12 to raise funds for the Dominican Republic hunger relief, but only about 1850 dollars were collected. Organizer Orville Bowersox cited publicity gaps and planning mistakes as the main reasons for not meeting the 5000 dollar target. The event started at the Maryland School for the Deaf and ended near St Paul's Church, with a few dropouts and some runners finishing in under four hours. Funds will go to CROP for alternative projects rather than livestock and gardens in the Caribbean.
