A sand truck lost brakes on Route 240 near Hyattstown causing a side swipe of six cars and a pickup. The crash sent vehicles over a 10 foot embankment with only a hand cut reported. Damage runs to thousands. Passengers were taken to the fire house for shock. Investigator from Montgomery County police probing. driver’s name unknown.
Dr Pillai Kim Choi, a Korean educator who endured three Japanese imprisonments, spoke in Frederick about rebuilding women’s roles and her Chung Sin School for 900 girls. She arrives from Korea to lecture in America, detailing Korea’s poverty, power shortages, and the push for democracy.
Budapest June 22 The Bench of Bishops of Hungary asks for an official review of church questions seen as government surrender. The government indicated it would accept, requiring bishops to pledge allegiance to the constitution and clergy to sign Stockholm peace petitions. The bench leads Hungary's Catholic Church since Cardinal Mindszenty’s 1949 imprisonment. Monks and nuns across 63 orders in 636 houses would be represented in talks with 11 000 clergy. Earlier Minister Revai condemned clergy as imperialist agitators, questioning their right to exist.
A short tale on thrift traces a ten dollar deposit made December 1 1842 at Worcester County Institution for Savings Worcester Massachusetts. Baltimore faces a major traffic jam Sunday as crowds gather for the dedication of Friendship International Airport with President Truman as the main speaker. If weather permits, Truman will fly from Washington. otherwise the trip will be by car. About 400 extra officers plus National Guard will manage traffic. an Air National Guard plane will assist with locating tie ups. The event kickoff included a downtown parade led by Mayor Thomas D Alesandro and business officials.
Senator Gillette says Senate investigators will examine numerous complaints of alleged huge expenditures in at least four senatorial primary races. He cites campaigns in North Carolina Florida Pennsylvania and Illinois and other states. Gillette chairs the Senate subcommittee on privileges and elections policing this year's 36 Senate races.
Dr John H. Gardner Jr., pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, will be chosen moderator of the Presbyterian Synod of Baltimore during the twenty fifth annual conference at Hood College. He succeeds Dr Halley B. Taylor and will name a vice moderator, Rev George J Riester, and continue extensive duties with the General Council and local church boards.
Four sets of railroad track at East Patrick street were replaced to place the tracks on grade and pave the roadway between them. The Fast street intersection is now open to traffic with detour signs removed. A water department crew repaired a service line leak in West Patrick street's second block.
In Redwood City California the ceiling and ornamental plaster fell from the balcony of the Sequoia theater just before midnight. About 30 people were injured, 15 hospitalized, and one person, Vangie Case, fell 80 feet from the loge seats but survived with non fatal injuries. Fire officials described the incident as an earthquake like collapse and casualties were treated by staff and police at the scene.
President Truman said he would vote the straight Democratic ticket if in Ohio and that Ohio will likely elect a Democratic senator. He refused early to comment on Governor Lausche’s undecided choice between Taft and Ferguson, noting he was at a Governors conference in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Washington June 22 Career diplomat John S Serview denied McCarthy charges that he aided Chinese Communists. Before the Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee he asserted he worked to resist Communism in China. The veteran diplomat pressed for a public hearing after initially facing a closed session plan.

Houck inherit what was reserved for Mrs Clara E. Santen, contending the testator intended equal shares among six children. Defense argues the will aimed to equalize the estate with specific trusts and life interests, noting prior gifts to Mrs Graybill and ongoing care considerations. Continuous testimony concluded with both sides preparing briefs for a decision.

In Tokyo Dulles outlined U S plans amid rapid Asia developments. MacArthur and Dulles favor prompt aid to Chinese Nationalists on Formosa and a Japan peace treaty. Johnson Bradley visit Okinawa to inspect air bases as Dulles meets Yoshii. Dulles urged decisive action to preserve peace, security, and justice in the region.
The Federal District Court in Washington scheduled to hear a new trial plea for Judith Coplen, the former Justice Department employee, on newly discovered evidence. Leonard Boudin, a New York attorney, would present the argument, while Albert H. Loveloy, her husband, was not indicated to participate.
Washington June 22 President Truman said the nation cannot pay for a 70 group air force while commenting on Congress proposed bills to authorize air strength. He noted the ceiling is 70 groups but the actual force depends on budget appropriations and the number of planes needed. The current force is about 48 first line groups with the bill setting the ceiling and allowing the Air Force secretary to determine plane purchases.
The United States asked the United Nations to create a conventional arms authority to supervise reduction and regulation of rifles artillery naval and aircraft weapons. The body would be staffed by UN Security Council members and operate at UN headquarters reporting violations and using majority rule with no veto, subject to Security Council review.
Wholesale quotes for beef pork and lighter poultry edged down this week in stores yet firmer wholesale prices signal that declines may be temporary. Veal lamb and lighter chickens were about unchanged heavier fowls fell one to four cents per pound as farmers cull flocks. Eggs rose one to three cents a dozen in some areas while produce mostly held or dropped with green corn prices sharpest decline.
