Temperatures top 90s for the first time this year as the summer solstice arrives at 4 33 p m today. A high near 92 follows Monday 8 0s and a 63 overnight. Lows tonight mid 60s. Wednesday should be sunny and a little earlier, Thursday cooler with cloudy skies. Ancient Peruvians held solstice rituals. Frederick County residents plan cooling activities indoors and swimming.
Frederick County Red Cross Blood Program seeks 500 new donors to meet a 3,250 pint yearly quota for 1966 67. Appointments are set for July and August at Evangelical Lutheran Church and State Farm Insurance. Blood is provided free of charge and replaces used pints in hospitals nationwide.
Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara said pressures to cut U S forces in Europe are legitimate and must be considered. He added the United States has no plans to reduce its European combat capability in the present circumstances.
In Moscow, President De Gaulle on an 11 day state visit urges breaking the East West stalemate. Firemen rushed to a blaze on Wolfsville Church Road about 10 15 a m saving a large bank barn from total loss. The fire started when owner Robert Baker burned trash nearby and spread to a shed and the barn. Myer s ville Middletown and Smithsburg sent units. no injuries reported.
William M Houck of Thurmont a seven year House of Delegates veteran announced yesterday as a candidate for the Democratic nomination for reelection. He is the first in the field and, at 46, has served as vice chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. He pushed the failed Cooper Hughes tax bill and says he seeks a responsible post in the lower house to reflect his seniority amid rural county underrepresentation in the reapportioned legislature.
Frederick County Commissioners approve using a room at Montevue Home for a Day Care Center for the Mentally Retarded. The center, now at Staley Park Field house, gains the room Aug 1, with six weeks to relocate city voting machines and consider a new building for all county voting machines.
Frederick County Commissioners consider installing utility sleeves or tunnels in the roadbed of relocated U S 340 between Frederick and Jefferson. Estimated cost about 27000 dollars. Officials note sleeves now save future tunneling costs and compare with sleeves planned for I 70 near Frederick, shared with the city.
A Marine jet crashed onto Old Buckroe Road in Hampton near dusk after colliding with another aircraft. Witnesses recalled a burning, debris filled scene that left a young boy dead and caused widespread destruction to homes and vehicles as families watched in horror.

The crash left two confirmed dead among residents, with 40 injured and 11 in hospital. Fire felled several homes as rescuers searched debris. four Marines ejected and survived.
G Raymond Shipley announces his bid for election as a judge of Frederick County Orphans Court. A Democrat and Freder ick native, he is a 1918 Boys High School graduate and veteran of both world wars. Former Sinclair Oil employee, he now serves as director and vice president of the Western Maryland Trust Company.
