Court Cannot Now Try Service Wives
Pentagon lawyers said no court can retry two service wives convicted by courts martial of murder as Supreme Court rulings undermine the authority over civilians abroad. Mrs. Dorothy Krueger Smith and Mrs. Clarice B. Covert had been freed by habeas and Supreme Court decisions, leaving no clear path for new trials. The women were linked to killings of military spouses in Japan and England.
