Publicity Memos Survive Theoretical Bomb Disaster
A 1955 simulated national emergency in Washington drew 159 reporters to a temporary government complex to test how the government would function if Washington were knocked out. Key figures included Murray Snyder, officials from State and Defense, and Gov. Val Peterson, who announced the exercise a success despite negative results. The event highlighted communication gaps, with handouts and delayed broadcasts revealing limits of a decentralized press corps.
