Frederick County Board okays central staff reorganization

The Frederick County Board of Education approved a reorganization of central administrative staff in curriculum development and instructional services led by Dr. Alfred Thackston Jr. A new Director of Curriculum and Staff Development will oversee curriculum designs and staff development while four positions in Pupil Services were eliminated. Direct reports to Dr Thackston decrease from 17 to nine as other staff shift to the new director. Two additional personnel changes were noted.

Beckt seeks re election in Dist 4B in Westminster

Raymond E Beck a Republican and minority leader filed June 13 to run again for the statehouse seat in District 4 B. He is 39 and has served six terms since 1972 after filling a vacancy left by Jacob Yingling. Beck aims to push property tax reform and de institutionalizing seniors with tax credits, plus higher teacher salaries.

New use for an old bridge

A century old iron bridge on the Keymar Detour road was replaced by a new two lane bridge. The old spans were moved to Cunningham Falls State Park beside U S 15 and repurposed as a footpath crossing Little Hunting Creek. Dewey Jordan Inc. rebuilt the arches with a wooden deck and green paint, creating a decorative pedestrian crossing in the park.

Christoff Ordered State Aid Forms Typed, Secretary Testifies

In Annapolis, Dr Patrick Christoff head of Frederick Community College continuing education program allegedly had state funding requests forms typed with ineligible courses. His secretary Mrs Joan Georgantis testified she compiled lists of names and addresses, then Christoff directed FCC work study students to convert them into registration cards claiming FCC course delivery. Courses cited include Foundations in Reading Instruction and Quantitative Methods.

No Growth in U S Economy in First Quarter

The Commerce Department reports virtually no inflation adjusted expansion in the first quarter, with output rising less than one tenth of a percent. Economists note that a healthy economy typically grows about 4 percent annually to sustain jobs and business activity. Previous estimates showed a shrinking economy, but the latest figure avoids a decline. Forecasters expect stronger growth in Q2 to offset the slow start.

Hood Graduate Offered No 2 Spot on Venetoulis Ticket

Hood College graduate Ann Stockett of Annapolis is offered the lieutenant governor role on Ted Venetoulis ticket. Stockett, 39, a former Hood student and County Council member, has not decided whether to accept. Also noted won Maryland Numbers Game drawing 273 and stock market dip as Fed rate action awaited.
