Forest Fire Toll Drops in 1957 as Protection Claims Credit
Forest fire data show 1957 produced the smallest acreage burned and the fewest fires in memory, with 83,392 fires destroying 3.5 million acres, down from 6.5 million acres and 143,000 fires in 1956 and from 23.2 million acres ten years earlier. Most of the decline is credited to organized fire protection and public campaigns including Smokey Bear and Keep Green, while lightning accounted for only seven percent of fires. 93.9 percent of forested land is now protected. The piece also notes a Loudoun County 4-H picnic with delegates from Uruguay and London attendance.
