President Taft and Mrs Taft celebrate their anniversary with a grand White House reception on June 1. Thousands of guests pass through the receiving line as the grounds glow with elaborate lanterns and colored lights creating a fairyland scene around the executive mansion.
A busy day at the executive mansion as the First Family receives a flood of silver gifts from national leaders. Congratulatory cables pour in from rulers worldwide while Roosevelt and Taft era figures send items, including antique silver bowls and ornate vases. Cabinet members donate numerous pieces, with special keepsakes from the Secretary of State, Treasury, War, and Navy, and ex-secretary Norton among donors.
A sparrow’s misfortune causes a car crash on the Bradley Beach route to Asbury Park. William Winans drives a Packard and loses control after the bird strikes his forehead, sending his car into a light runabout driven by Lr. S. A. Disbrow. Disbrow’s doctor companion is injured. Winans escapes unharmed. The sparrow dies. Also reported a drowning: Samuel Connie, nine, drowns in the Christiana River while trying to paddle a boat with companions.
Washington hearings reveal James C. Post testifying on the National Sugar Refining merger scheme. Promoter stock valued at $10,000,000 plus $2,500,000 in dividends paid to Havemeyer. questioned over plans to form National Sugar Refining Company of New Jersey by consolidating New York refineries and the Newark unit, amid accusations of anticompetitive intent and stock manipulation.
Continental powers representatives reach London for coronation events while thousands flee the city to escape expected crowds. King George and Queen Mary attend Westminster Abbey as rehearsals unfold and streets glow with unprecedented decorations.
The exchange discusses the ownership of common stock in the American Sugar Refining company. Mr Hardwick contends Havemeyer acted as agent and used company money to buy stock via options, arguing the American Sugar Refining company is entitled to the stock, while the other party says the American Sugar company did not want it.
The torpedo boat Rowan and the submarine Grampus collided near San Diego on June 20. A large hole ripped the Rowan’s side while the Grampus sustained no injuries. No crew members on either vessel were harmed.
