MacArthur keynote at Republican Convention sparks Army duty clash
The Nation Today reports on Gen. MacArthur’s keynote at Chicago’s Republican National Convention and the Army rule restricting active duty officers from political activity. With Eisenhower on the retired list, questions arise whether the general may speak for Taft. The President and Pentagon show cautious stance as duty vs speech rights collide.
Question Looms Over MacArthur Speech Politicality
The Pentagon notes MacArthur remains on active duty though lacking command or formal duties and the line between political and non political speech is debated. Eight speeches since returning to Japan show criticism of the Truman administration without naming him, including a May 14 address to the Michigan Legislature where he says the talk is not political but Americanism. A stray instruction on cleaning milk bottles ends the fragment.
