Two Grants For U Of Md
Two grants totaling 25000 dollars were awarded to the University of Maryland department of botany to continue a nematode study. The project began in 1956 with Richard A Rohde and led to discovery that a toxin in asparagus acts as an antibiotic against many nematodes. Grants include 10000 from the Rockefeller Foundation and 5000 from Shell Development. The work aims to control nematodes in crops by spraying extracted material and to test the antibiotic on other plants and nematodes. Dr. Rohde and Dr. William R Jenkins note Maryland farmers lose about 12 million dollars yearly to nematodes, threatening tomatoes peppers cucumbers strawberries tobacco corn soybeans and more.
