Chinese say 40000 Jap losses in 40 day Yangtze battle
Chinese army spokesmen report about 40,000 Japanese were killed or wounded during a 40 day clash along the upper Yangtze. Less than two thirds of the invaders escaped the Chinese trap as American and Chinese air support struck targets near Ichang, Yochow, and Onchi Kow. US planes damaged warehouses at Lotus Pond Inlet and claimed destruction of several enemy aircraft southwest of Nanchan. Chinese forces also engaged Japanese troops along the Canton-Hankow railway area.

Cork Oak Seedlings Thrive at State Nursery in Maryland
State Forester Joseph F. Kaylor reports cork oak acorn seedlings at the Maryland State Forest nursery are thriving and potential cork production could monetize abandoned and unproductive land in southern counties. Trees reach bark stripping readiness in 15 to 20 years with no harm as new bark forms. The effort, part of a national cork campaign led by Crown, Cork and Seal, aims to reduce reliance on imports from the Mediterranean. The note closes with an aside that the U.S. president at the time receives a semi monthly salary.
