Noxious cloud from Du Pont blast overruns river area
A Friday night explosion at Du Pont Chambers Works in Deepwater New Jersey seriously burned a worker identified as Hugh Refferto 27 of Carneys Point. The blast sent a noxious orange cloud across the Delaware River toward Wilmington prompting eye throat and respiratory irritation but no hospitalizations from fumes. The plant fire department fought the blaze about an hour as officials stressed phenol glycidyl ether used for dye production was involved. the site is Du Pont’s largest U S facility employing about six to seven thousand workers.
