Repeal Of Political Ad Curbs Endorsed By Legislative Group
BALTIMORE API A Legislative Council committee approved without dissent a bill to repeal a 1965 law barring newspapers from charging higher rates for political advertising than other local ads. If the full council sustains the decision at the July 13 meeting, the measure goes to the 1967 Legislature with a recommendation for enactment. The Maryland Delaware Press Association seeks the repeal, arguing the 1965 law is bad policy and applies only to newspapers, not radio or television. Critics note political ads are costlier to handle and seasonal, while many papers favor uniform local display rates. Representing the industry were Delaplaine Jr of Frederick, Cronin of Aberdeen, and Bucklew of Ellicott City.
