Jefferson man named national hero for train track rescue

Paul Newton of Jefferson, a 41 year old auditor, pulled a woman to safety from railroad tracks as a train sped by. The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission awarded him a bronze medal and 2500 dollars for the peaceful rescue, later airing his feat on national TV. The incident occurred at the Silver Spring Base Station on March 12, 1982, as Newton and his pregnant wife Cheryl watched a 36 year old woman lie on the tracks in front of an approaching train.
