After three months of debate, the Frederick Town Historic Commission denied the Junior Fire Co.'s request to tear down a dilapidated yet notable building on North Market Street. Members argued public safety falls outside preservation purview, with no prepared statement on the outcome and continued questions about authority.
Frederick County Public Schools plans Tuscarora High with total cost near 43.5 million including land, design, construction, equipment, and libraries. Urbana High built for about 30 million and Tuscarora will be similar in size, location on Kallenger Creek Pike, with comparable classrooms and facilities.
Adrene Harper loses her Parkway Elementary principal post but will see a small pay change as she moves to staff developer. Her new salary 74 698 versus 75 059 as principal, while July 1 projections show a higher principal pay if she had remained. She joined Hillcrest as administrator after appealing to the board but the board upheld the removal.
Millennium Development Group completed a 4 million purchase of the 122 acre South Rosenstock Farm from J&R Limited Partnership. The farm is the final parcel for the Riverside Corporate Center on Gas House Pike, part of Frederick's Monocacy Boulevard industrial corridor. Millennium has now spent over 10 million for about 451 acres across three farms. MIE Properties expects tenants by early fall in portions of the park, with construction on the first high tech office building to begin this summer.
A $15 million wrongful death suit was filed over a 1999 pedestrian crash on U.S. 40 near Hi Drive. The victim, a 12 year old, was struck by a car driven by Candace Staub, 17, and died at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. The suit alleges faulty signaling and timing by government agencies, claiming unsafe crossing conditions. A jury trial is requested.
A 31 year old New Market man pleaded guilty to wire fraud and faces up to five years in prison and a 250000 dollar fine. Curt Anthony Glorioso promoted music acts including the Backstreet Boys Am Grant and Jimmy Buffett. He remains free on bail and will be sentenced February 1 by US District Court Judge Frederick Smallan. Officials said the charges stem from representations made as a concert promoter and restitution totaling nearly two million dollars is ordered.
