In St Louis on June 15 Mitchel Palmer of Pennsylvania former congressman and ally of President Wilson unveiled the tariff plank of the Democratic platform. The draft includes an anti dumping section to shield American producers from cheap foreign goods anticipated at war's end. Henry Morgenthau and J Bruce Kremer are noted to handle the financial side of the campaign with Palmer. Senator John W Kern of Indiana, a key backer of Vice President Marshall, helps lead the support.
Washington reports President Wilson will not countenance a plank in the Democratic platform calling for a law to ban federal judges from leaving the bench for elective office. Administration officials say he did not want petty politics in the platform. London reports German newspapers say the British cruiser Hampshire was sunk by a submarine.
Glynn voices support for Wilson and Marshall with a call for Americanism, peace, preparedness and prosperity at the Democratic National Convention in St Louis. About 12,000 delegates and spectators attend as Glynn urges neutrality in European war while affirming US duties and traditions.
