Court upholds Maryland law banning oil company owned gas stations

The Supreme Court, by a 7-1 vote led by Justice Stevens, upholds Maryland’s ban on oil producers directly operating retail gas stations, allowing about 238 stations to cease operations within a year. It rejected appeals claiming interstate commerce violations, while Blackmun dissented citing protectionist bias. The ruling clarifies state power to regulate the retail gasoline market and may affect similar laws in Delaware, California, Rhode Island, and DC.
