Surtax Extension Doubtful to Clear by Fiscal Year End
Washington AP. Senate Finance’s senior Republican John J. Williams voices strong doubt that Congress can complete action on the 10 percent surtax extension by June 30. House passage is unlikely before late next week, and Senate consideration may be squeezed to about 10 days for Finance action, floor debate, and a conference. The Nixon administration urges a June 30 deadline with possible temporary extensions. Williams notes possible delays from a spending ceiling fight and tax-law loophole fixes, including repeal of the investment tax credit. Senate hearings are planned once the House acts.
