Frederick City police described an apparent domestic incident between a husband and wife that escalated to murder and death by own action. Connie Lee Wachtel, 34, and Paul Edwin Wachtel, 38, were found outside the front door of their Smithsburg home at 13936 Wolfsville Road.
Richard Allen Stambaugh Jr., 28, died after his car left the road and struck a utility pole at 3:20 a.m. on Petersville Road near Md 180. He was flown to Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown and pronounced dead at 4:15 a.m. Police cited speed, alcohol and driver error, with no seatbelt use.
Col. Charles W. Churchill, who joined Fort Detrick during morning drills two years ago as its youngest commander, will relinquish command July 19 to Col. Larry G. Johnson and move to the Surgeon General's Office to shape medical forces for 2000 and beyond. He plans hospital improvements in combat zones and stresses customer service for the Fort Detrick community.
Patriotism surges as the Sertoma Club raises 125 U S Maryland and Frederick flags in downtown Frederick for Flag Day. The display, planned by Jack Doll, has lasted 25 years with banners mounted on parking meters from dawn to around 5 pm. The complaint, referencing the Taxpayers in Action organization of which Way is a member, seeks discussion of the matter at a Saturday meeting at 10 a.m. in Winchester with the meeting likely closed, and claims two commissioners were excluded from the legislative process during a key vote. The complaint also accuses Sundergill and Bowerman of unethical conduct for voting on the tax rate.
Frederick officials will maintain a southbound detour for 18-wheeler trucks from North Bentz Street via Dill and Rosemont Avenues to U S 15 during Bentz Street bridge replacement as residents urge traffic sharing. The plan precedes a summer 1992 closure of West Patrick Street for bridge work and faces concerns over safety and noise near Hood College.
