Menke enters Montgomery County executive race in bid to cut costs
County councilman John Menke 37 of Barnesville formally launched his bid for county executive from the Rockville station steps. A Democrat and former National Bureau of Standards physicist, he touted tax payer savings and pledged to curb capital and operating budgets if elected. He trails Royce Hanson and Charles Gilchrist in the September 12 primary, called for a consensus candidate, and cited energy conservation work that saved the county over 4 million in three years. Menke framed governance as adapting old forms to new needs and highlighted mass transit support. He joins Republicans Max Keeney and Albert Ceccone in seeking the post, while the current executive indicated he may not run.
