First Fight at Gettysburg 1863 detailed in Kilmer narrative
A 1868 reprint recounts the dawn of July 1 at Gettysburg with Confederate Heth advancing for shoes and sugar, clashing with Reynolds and the Iron Brigade. The day sees heavy fighting west of town, Cemetery Hill, and a stubborn Confederate push thwarted by Union resolve and tactical countercharges. Kilmer notes names, units, and the grim tolls on both sides.
