Maryland growers turn to anhydrous ammonia to boost crop yields and protein content. The substance, injected into soil, is cheaper per unit in large operations and widely used in the Midwest. Benefits peak on low fertility soils with adequate moisture and little prior fertilizer, with applicators mounted on tractors and designed to reach five to six inches into the ground.
