Lewis and Bridges Back Plan to Preserve Miners Benefits
Washington June 11 Lewis and Senator Bridges voted to continue welfare fund payments for distressed miners using the 1947 welfare fund. Ezra Van Horn opposes, promising a quick lawsuit to block payments as the 146 fund would exhaust by July 1 when the soft coal contract ends. The dispute centers on funding and who bears obligations from the 1956 contract, with operators warned against strike actions while funding remains frozen.

Washington June 11 House leaders put the draft bill on the must list for action next week. Whether the country will have such a law this year depends on 12 men and what they go in the next few days. The Services Committee backs the draft measure but the Rules Committee has not approved it yet.
