Prospective Sweden Relief Work Supports Unemployment Image
A Stockholm dispatch to the Times notes Sweden as an island in the unemployment sea with 172000 jobless in the postwar era. It highlights labor shortages in offices and skilled trades, a strong reliance on public relief works, and credits Parliament with funding 354 million kronor for relief jobs though only 6 million work days were completed by mid year. The piece suggests Swedes welcome relief work as a buffer against future downturns and applaud state aid keeping workers employed during lean spells.
