Philadelphia June 12 Provost Harrison announces a 100000 subscription toward the University of Pennsylvania medical laboratories to be used in the pathology department as a memorial. The gift, among the largest to the department, will fund immediate progress and details will be announced after trustees meeting.
Judge Samuel W. Pennypacker of Philadelphia was nominated for governor on the first ballot by a Republican state convention with 206 votes to 152 for John P. Elkin of Indiana County. William M. LGrown and Major Isaac B. Brown were nominated by acclamation for lieutenant governor and secretary of internal affairs. Senator Quay was unanimously chosen state committee chairman. The platform endorses Roosevelt, tariff reform, ballot reforms, and opposes trusts. Pennypacker’s nomination marks a personal win for Quay.
The proprietor of the American House in Hamilton Bermuda offered to spread a feast for 120 Boer boys held in prison camps in the harbor. Doves were entertained in packs of 25 each.
In New York United States labor commissioner Carroll D Wright met with President Truesdale of the Lackawanna and President Fowler of the Ontario and Western. The disaster, described as the worst in Central Illinois history, left many injured and thousands of shade and fruit trees flattened.
Peoria Indiana was struck by a violent storm traveling at 80 mph causing widespread destruction. At least ten people died and many injured as telegraph lines, rail lines, and factories were crippled. Kingston Mines suffered severe damage with multiple deaths and dozens injured. property losses exceed $20,000. A separate incident near Corinthia reports a tornado blowing three freight cars from an Iowa Central train with no injuries.
