U.S.-Japan trade talks move to serious bargaining
After two months of sparring, U.S. and Japan began in-person talks on a broad framework to govern four years of trade negotiations. President Clinton aimed to have ground rules ready by the July Tokyo economic summit. Negotiators met at a Treasury breakfast and at the State Department, with Mondale slated as Japan ambassador.

Fort Detrick to house large new waste treatment facility
The proposed funding plan calls for about 15 million for the current year 1994, 65 million through 1995, and 20 million for the next year. The facility would be the largest single story building at Fort Detrick. The steam sterilization plant there can handle up to 2 million gallons daily of contaminated liquid waste and leverages local expertise to ensure safety for workers and Frederick County residents.

Breyer as Clinton’s Supreme Court pick gains GOP support
Judge Breyer, former aide to Senator Kennedy, draws praise for consensus building and legal acumen. Republicans like Orrin Hatch call him a fantastic choice, noting his ability to forge agreement across liberal and conservative voices. Clinton seeks a moderate, abortion-rights ally to stabilize a 5-4 court. Breyer’s record includes ruling against the gag rule and service as Watergate prosecutor aide.
