June brings stress to school boards as teaching vacancies rise and candidates face scrutiny. Despite normal schools and colleges, finding able teachers is harder as women turn to business and professional fields for higher pay. Many women run farms, shops, restaurants, hotels, or newspapers where brains and business merit are valued over sex, making the teaching grind less attractive amid high living costs. The average elementary teacher earns 3559 while a street cleaner earns 631. in all fields brains command better pay than muscle.
