Potter vetoes funding to haul waste out of Montgomery County
Montgomery County Executive Neal Potter vetoed $24 million in the 1994 budget earmarked to haul solid waste out of the county after the Oaks Landfill in Laytonsville would close. He argues the funds could pay for a new school or several public safety and library projects, delaying the plan to move trash to out-of-county sites until an incinerator opens in 1996. The veto blocks a council motion to close the Oaks site and raises questions about overriding votes and plan consistency.
