Control Of Sea Lanes Big Help In Invasion

Annapolis June 7 Navy Secretary Forrestal told the 104th graduating class of the U S Naval Academy that control of Atlantic sea lanes by American and British navies over the past two and a half years made the invasion of Europe possible. He cited convoys of 7 400 vessels since Jan 1 1942 with only 10 losses, none of them troop transports, and stressed a balanced fleet using air power and coordinated surface ships and aircraft as key to victory. He warned against relaxing the pressure against Japan and Germany, noting the need for continued decisive action.

American and British troops held a 50 mile coastal arc and pushed inland up to 12 miles in places as air and airborne forces reinforced Tuesday’s assault. The German Navy was largely absent though the Luftwaffe intensified strikes and high command remained unsure of Allied intentions.
