Siege on the Mississippi Bluffs at Vicksburg 1862

In June 1862, Union forces under Colonel Fitch and Commodore Davis attacked Confederate batteries below St. Charles near Vicksburg. The battle featured gunboats Maurepas Port Chartrain and Macropes, plus infantry under Forty-sixth Indiana, against batteries manned by Captain Fry and Captain Dunnington. A savage duel left the ironclad Mound City crippled by a direct shell hit, while Texas troops and sharpshooters pressed the Confederates as Navy and Army attempted to silence the bluffs.
