Private Toll Bridge Still Serves Maryland Quietly
A lone privately owned Potomac crossing near Oldtown Maryland continues to operate with a low toll regime. Melvin R Carpenter now 79 and living in Brookhaven Massachusetts built the one lane structure decades ago to span the river and serve Allegany County workers and nearby industry. The bridge carries railroad creosoting plant traffic and is used by 29 792 tolls 79 657 automobile crossings and 651 pedestrians yearly with no toll taker overnight. The structure rests on ten concrete piers and features ten railroad track strips under creosoted oak planking. The Public Service Commission has questioned depreciation filings while Carpenter defends the bridge as enduring and affordable.
