German assaults along the Verdun front east of the Meuse continue with heavy losses to German troops as French infantry repeatedly repulse attacks. Fort Vaux remains in French hands while fighting intensifies near Dam Ioup and Douaumont with artillery battles near Hill 304. British despatches report Canadians at Hill 60 and Sanctuary Wood delivering stiff resistance along the front.
British naval officers report the German battleship Hindenburg and the battle cruiser Lützow sunk in the battle off Jutland. A Ribe radio says Seydlitz was seen west of Fano Island, badly damaged and likely sunk. British admiralty notes destroyer attacks May 31 to June 1 and the fleet remaining on scene through June 1.
German forces launched a sweeping bombardment across a 3909 yard front from the Ypres Comines railway to Hooge Point. Canadian battalions backed by British artillery counterattacked, regaining most positions overnight with Americans among the troops. The Hooge sector saw the assault halted with ivy losses.
London June 6 official announcement confirms the death of Earl Kitchener secretary of state for war and his staff. His ship Harmpahirg was struck by a German torpedo off the Orkney Islands. Four boats were seen departing the wreck as patrols searched the shore for survivors but none were found.
Five hours after its arrival the fleet was said ready for action. The report claims German losses were falsified and lists destruction of at least two battle cruisers, probably two battleships, four light cruisers, eight destroyers and one submarine.
