Affluent Rockwell Terrace residents push zoning changes to curb rooming houses. They gained Planning Commission support for measures allowing only one boarder in large homes while permitting up to four in others. Fears of transient influx and loss of neighborhood character spurred a petition signed by 4, a dozen residents from Rockwell Terrace and nearby streets south of Hood College. Continued on Page A1.
Frederick County leaders debate using public funds for an advertisement praising the real estate industry. Economic development director Marie Keegin proposed placing the ad in Frederick Magazine’s July issue, which centers on real estate. Commissioner John L Thompson Jr questioned spending taxpayer money on such praise and urged readers to weigh in. Report continues on Page A-12.
Four seventh and eighth graders at Middletown Middle School were arrested after tips of drug dealing at the school. Deputies cuffed them and took them to patrol headquarters to be charged before returning to their parents. Principal Debra Munk said tips from students led to the arrests and described the investigation as productive. A deputy noted a small amount of marijuana found inside a seventh grader’s shoe.
Brunswick Elementary School educator Kristen Canning is chosen as the state Teacher of the Year amid family connections to past honorees. Her mother, Mary Jones, was 1991 county Teacher of the Year and taught at Kemptown Elementary, while colleagues note Canning’s lasting impact as former students return for visits.
Years after leaving Mrs. Cannings class former students return to thank her for believing in them and inspiring a love of learning. She emphasizes that her time with students extends beyond 3 30 pm as she attends recitals and games to stay involved in their lives.
Burkittsville voters elected Dar Meyer mayor with 57 votes in a Monday town election. Meyer, a retired Naval officer, will assume office next month while the former mayor joins the council. Heidi Campbell Shoat won a seat with 36 votes, Debby Burgoyne 4, Joyce Brown 46, Pat Farmion 2, and Nanos Heist 3, with results continuing on Page A12.
