Shorter drying period boosts grass silage quality

Dr. Moore notes that drying swath crops to about 65 percent moisture cuts time to ensile. On good days two hours may suffice to reduce moisture from 75 percent. The USDA has Leaflet 239 with a simple home device to judge correct moisture and avoid air exposure during storage. Cutting to about half inch and proper packing are essential.

Maryland Farmers Increase Use of AAA Lime Contracts

Farmers in Maryland under the Agricultural Adjustment Agency program ordered more liming materials in the first four months of this year than in all of 1943. The materials, distributed through AAA, aim to boost war-food yields per acre and conserve soil fertility during intensive cultivation. Growing Soybean Hay as a Late May Crop Plan

College Park June 5. Agronomy specialist John W. Magruder of the University of Maryland extension urges farmers with thin clover and timothy stands from drought or lime and fertility shortages to cut in late May and plow for a soybean hay crop. Early harvest improves hay quality and opens land for an extra midsummer hay yield.

College Park Timothy John W. Magruder University of Maryland Extension Service

Soybean planting timing and soil amendments advised

Mr. Magruder notes that slight yield reductions may occur with higher quality soybeans. Clover and timothy hay or silage can supplement pastures, soybean hay for winter feeding. Plow after cutting to plant soybeans in early June. Lime 1,000–2,000 pounds per acre and 300 pounds per acre of 0-14-17 fertilizer may boost yield. Virginia or Wilson varieties good for hay. Manchu for earlier planting. Seed inoculation required.
