Contour Furrows for Erosion Control Urged Near College Park
Contour furrows are promoted as a practical erosion control method for pastures. Bruce state coordinator notes farmers in Boonsboro Harwood and White Hall use them effectively. One furrow per 10 inch plow width can cover two to five acres in ten hours. Furrows ten feet apart hold water and form a berm on the downhill side. After plowing, lime fertilize and seed to Maryland pasture mix, then topdress with manure. Grazing should be delayed until establishing. Tests suggest furrowed pastures retain moisture up to 30 percent more than unfurrowed. County agents report livestock drink from channels after storms. City property transfers and deeds are also recorded.
