Harrisburg June 6 Dairy and Food Commissioner Foust instructed Special Agent Cassidy to file six cases in Philadelphia against bakers selling sponge cakes colored with coal tar dye to imitate eggs and three more for mixed cakes with coal tar dye. Fifteen more suits target coal tar colored cakes in Pittsburgh and soft drink dealers using artificial sweeteners. cases also cover imitation cider vinegar lard and cherries and an oleomargarine matter. The move aims to forge a strict pastry law banning coal tar colors artificial icings and related drug use in baked goods.
Washington reports administration circles show rising optimism for the reciprocal agreement. The Root wood pulp and paper schedule amendment faces defeat. Senator Penrose of Pennsylvania says there is no chance for the Root amendment, while Champ Clark rejects a fall recess. Finance committee plans to vote on the big measure June 7 without amendment.
Washington June 5 Postmaster General Hitchcock plans to expand the postal savings bank system to 150 additional offices weekly aiming for 1000 depositors in operation early in the new fiscal year. Fifty offices will begin at once including Albion New York Calais Maine Keene New Hampshire Rahway New Jersey Lisnuchville Virginia and Lansford Pennsylvania.
Washington June 5 Authority for an inquiry into the advisability of establishing a parcels post system was proposed to be given to the state committee on post offices and post roads by a resolution introduced by Senator Hourne, chairman of that committee. Tramburg June 4 The dirigible balloon Parsevat V1 arrived here from Berlin after a difficult trip. It will start at an early date for “Ozenhagei.”
A Yosemite cliff road tragedy, part of a Raymond Whitcomb touring party, left R. A. Leistnring of Altontown Pa dead and several others injured as four horses panicked after brake failure. The stage rolled over a steep descent, wrecking the coach and killing the horses amid screams from terrified passengers.
Peabody Mass June 5 University of Pennsylvania takes first Intercollegiate balloon race defying Dartmouth and Williams in distance and duration. The Philadelphia IL landed near West Peabody after 115 miles in about seven hours. Pilot A T Abherholt and navigator George A Richardson reported landing in woods after a thunderstorm. Height reached 12 000 feet over Fitchburg. Dartmouth Hes ton and passenger John W Pearson landed West Pelham Mass forty one miles from North Adams after three hours fifteen minutes. Williams Stevens No 27 with H P Sherman and K T Price landed Paxton sixty six miles from North Adams.
Governor Wootrow Wilson of New Jersey hosted a Washington reception at the New Willard for Democrats, senators and officials after a 500 mile speechmaking tour. Senator Martine organized the visit and Wilson praised Democratic House actions on the Underwood revenue wool bill while noting shifting party loyalties among veterans.
Poultry fanciers in Caroline county report heavy losses as a new rosebug pest invades rose gardens. Mrs. A M Dulin lost over 100 chickens and several others report large deaths. twenty two bugs were found in some crops of chickens. Burrsville Maryland June 5.

H S Smith of McKinney Texas sues for divorce claiming his wife strongly opposes Senator J W Batley while he supports him. The case frames the dispute around political loyalties rather than misconduct or tradition.
