Frederick’s sewerage project marks a major public works milestone
The 1935-37 Frederick City sewerage program, aided by a federal grant and the Singapore filtration plant, progressed through nine contracts with bids under estimates. By April 1937 about 40.26 miles of 48 planned sewers were installed, with engineering costs 8 to 9 percent of total. Unemployment fell from 1,368 to 854 by May 1937 as labor, mostly Frederick residents, benefited. taxes would rise only 10 to 15 cents, and bond maturity was carefully planned to prevent spikes.
