Six miles from Sumter a coast line excursion train carrying African American passengers into Columbia collided with a washout from a cloudburst. Conductor Clements died, four black passengers perished, about 30 injured, engineer Wilson badly scalded. Surgeons rushed from Sumter and Columbia.
