New Railread Bills Pass First Reading In House
In Harrisburg June 4 the Emery and Fecht transit bills passed first reading in the House. They will move to second reading today and third reading tomorrow for final passage. Senate amendments to the Ferrebee store bill and Garner mine inspectors bill were concurred in and a conference was requested on the Ferrebee measure. The 25 percent tax on store orders was amended, and mine inspectors in the anthracite region will be elected by the people. A Pittsburg “ripper” city amendment was discussed. First cousins marriage bill defeated.

Miss Caroline Jarvis of Iowa City received a bravery medal from Irving Institute for saving R. M. Fagan a university student after a boating accident when wind capsized their boat. Fagan could not swim, Jarvis guided him to the boat then swam to shore pushing the craft ahead. Also notes a Wilmington jail term for Daniel Miller and pardons for George Hutt and James Johnson.

In Ellwood City a wealthy resident, Costen Burns, was attacked while traveling with $2,100 for quarry workers. Three men, one wearing black goggles, seized him and fled with the satchel.
