House panel starts hearings on Reagan tax plan
Washington AP. The House Ways and Means Committee opens three months of hearings on President Reagan's tax proposal amid heavy lobbying. Chairman Dan Rostenkowski aims to air the plan with no drafting until after Labor Day while Senate head Sen. Packwood plans to hold off on a bill until the House finishes. Expect a possible bill by Christmas, though optimism is tempered by cross party and chamber conflicts. Treasury and IRS officials warn that eliminating state and local tax deductions would boost 1990 revenues, complicating reform. Five corporate chiefs testify at Tuesday hearing, signaling scaled business impact.
