Hewitt files as candidate for Montgomery executive
John P. Hewitt, 59, filed in Rockville to run for Montgomery County Executive as a Republican. Former director of the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Hewitt brands himself a moderate to conservative candidate and aims to appeal to both parties while criticizing incumbent Charles W. Gilchrist for indecision and policy clashes. He notes past Democratic attempts and pledges efficient, no nonsense management if elected.

MontCo officer placed on leave for shooting
A Montgomery County police officer Bruce Jackson, nine years on the force, was placed on administrative leave with powers revoked after an internal investigation into a February Bethesda fatal shooting. Police Chief Bernard Crooke cited four rule violations, while the grand jury cleared Jackson of criminal charges. The officer will remain on leave pending final disposition of the administrative process. The incident began when Jackson and another off duty officer confronted Jan Michael Moore after Moore left his car and, holding a knife, approached in the vehicle’s vicinity. Jackson fired one shot after identifying himself, Moore drove away, crashed, and died at the scene.
