Wormseed oil era ends as substitutes replace Carroll County crop
Donald C Magin closed his worm seed oil distillery in 1966 when synthetic substitutes crashed prices. Goosefoot, once a major cash crop along Carroll County’s western border, faded to weed status as growers shifted to corn or hay. The five mile belt produced top earnings, with $1 million at peak, and Magin recalls two year operations around the clock. The oil’s active ingredient was later synthesized, ending a century of profitable wormseed production in the county and leaving Magin’s still as a rusting relic near Ridge Road.
