Senate alters aid bill with few changes in Foreign Relations panel
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee made two or three changes to the aid measure as urged by President Eisenhower, with all changes upheld in the Senate. A provision would have empowered Hollister to free up to 30 percent of top-grade FDA employees. that was stripped. The FDA expires June 20 and Hollister will head a new economic aid agency in the State Department. A tied vote blocked Knowland and Capehart’s bid to reinstate a softer provision. The panel set limits on the 200 million June 3 1955 Asian Development Fund, requiring half to be loaned and capping any single nation’s share at 25 percent.
