May Rename Bishop Hughes For Washington Area

Temporary appointment of Bishop Edwin Holt Hughes to head the Washington area of the Methodist Church will be recommended to the Northeastern Jurisdiction meeting in New York on June 15. Hughes, retired since 1940, would replace Bishop Adna Wright Leonard who died in an Iceland airplane crash. The recommendation was the main item at the Baltimore Annual Methodist Conference attended by about 900 ministers and laymen from Western and Southern Maryland and the District of Columbia. The conference closes tomorrow.

Gibraltar Clears Allied Shipping Through Strait at Dawn

Dispatches from La Linea report Gibraltar has been virtually cleared of Allied shipping. Seventy merchantmen troop transports and tankers passed through the Strait from the Atlantic to North Africa at dawn yesterday. A second convoy of freighters six tankers and one hospital ship departed Gibraltar harbor for the Mediterranean and North Africa.

Air Activity In South Pacific Area Renewed

United States Navy released a communique detailing renewed air operations in the South Pacific. American bombers struck Bougainville and Kiska in the Aleutians while small enemy groups on Attu were wiped out. Fires burned at Tinpots and Numa Numa harbors as two small enemy vessels off Tinpots were bombed and one beached.
