The Washington Star highlights Francis Lewis born September 3 1840 in Frederick City. He joined the paid department October 3 1864, rose from supernumerary to fireman in 1875, became engineer, served in Engine Companies 2 6 and 3, and was foreman of Engine Company No 3 from August 3 1883. The Richmond Texas Register reports the death of Arthur Eckman, 16, missing since last Friday. His decomposed body was found south of the fair grounds in coffee bushes near the sand hills. Trainsmen fend off tramp attack on freight train
An extra freight train leaving Bayview at 3 30 p m was attacked by four tramp riders who refused to exit. Conductor Clough and crew fought them off with the help of fireman and other railroad staff. The tramps were captured near Winters Run and handed to police in Wilmington after a revolver was drawn. One tramp was severely beaten. others escaped briefly but were later recaptured. Two tramps reportedly escaped by jumping from a car window.
